Situated in the old mining town of La Thuile, The Le Miramonti is a beautiful hotel that’s ideal for families. I’ve stayed there on a number of occasions and myself, my husband and my children love it.

It’s a luxury hotel that has a friendly, laid-back atmosphere. Staff are very welcoming and helpful and speak good English. It’s only a five-minute walk to the slopes but if you don’t feel like lugging your skis and boots there by yourself, the hotel offers a free shuttle bus that runs on request from outside their ski storage room. There’s also a bus that loops La Thuile all day, run by the local council, and is free of charge.

There’s a Wellness Centre that boasts a small pool with water gym equipment, sauna, steam bath, revitalizing shower and tranquillity lounge. ‘That sounds far too fancy for children’, I hear you say but children are actually allowed in the wellness centre until 5pm, free of charge. The pool with the gym equipment is great fun for kids and they’re even permitted a little nosy in the sauna or steam room (under the watchful eye of the staff!) as long as there aren’t any adults using them. It’s really quite pleasant to sit in the tranquillity lounge with a tea or coffee and watch the kids in the pool. Though for myself and my husband it did create the problem that our children wanted to finish skiing early so that they would have plenty of time in the pool!!

The food is fabulous. I am vegetarian, my husband is a fussy eater and my kids are typical kids when it comes to food. We were all well-catered for. Each night the vegetarian option was delicious, the restaurant was flexible if my husband wanted to alter the ingredients slightly and my children loved the ‘Big Chicken Nugget’ aka Pollo Milanese (which they asked for every night).

There’s also a great park just round the back of the hotel that has a zip wire, though it is probably better for slightly older kids (6 years +).

It isn’t just the Le Miramonti that my family loves, we also think that skiing in La Thuile is fabulous. It caters for all levels. For complete beginners there’s a wonderful purpose-built area at the bottom of the slopes (no carrying your skis on a chair lift, feeling petrified) which has a magic carpet. Once you (or your children) have progressed from the beginners’ slope there are 33 blue runs to try, most of which are really long, cutting down on the time spent on chair lifts. There’s plenty for the more advanced skier, not only has La Thuile got 32 red runs and 15 black runs it’s also joined to the French resort of La Rosière which is included on your La Thuile lift pass, giving you over 150 kms of slopes to ski should you wish. It’s also worth noting that it’s so spacious that even at peak times such as February half-term and Easter it doesn’t feel crowded and queues are rare.

The village of La Thuile is very picturesque. It’s small but has 15 restaurants, a crèperie and ice cream parlour, not to mention the world famous Chocolate Shop on the bridge – the chocolate fondues are a must!

The Le Miramonti and La Thuile are my favourite places to stay and ski. For family-friendly skiing there really isn’t a better choice.
