About The Resort
First developed around two ancient churches at the foot of Mont Blanc, the now large village of Courmayeur is steeped in history. While retaining plenty of charm, the resort is also well equipped for the modern visitor with shops, restaurants and bars galore. Courmayeur is a stones throw from Chamonix, through the Mont Blanc Tunnel and given its proximity to France has blended the best that France and Italy have to offer.
On The Mountain
Courmayeur caters for all levels of skier and offers great variety and scope to intermediates in particular. It may not be the largest of ski areas but it does have it all.
For those that want to challenge themselves, the “del Orso” piste, is always quiet, even during Carnivale (Italian half-term), mainly due to the fact that it’s a long, black, bumps run which once you have started there is only one way off and that is down!
Experts will particularly love the off-piste terrain, which is rarely tracked out and the heliskiing opportunities in the area.
The numerous mountain restaurants on offer mean that stopping for a break is always a pleasure, from a quick coffee to full blow gourmet meal, the full range is catered for at reasonable prices.
The new Skyway Monte Bianco cable car can be used free of charge with a week’s ski pass and offers stunning views over Courmayeur, Val Ferret and Val Veny, rising to over 3500m surrounded by glaciers and the summit of Monte Bianco almost within touching distance.
One of the factors which sets Courmayeur apart is the scenery. Whichever direction you turn there are magnificent views, not far off in the distance as is the case in many resorts across the Alps but rather right there in front of you. Whether it be the summit of Monte Bianco, the Brenva glacier or the view down the valley towards Aosta, it’s quite simply spectacular.
The other factor, unlike many well-known French resorts, Val D’Isere, Tignes, Chamonix, Morzine etc… is that outside of the classic holiday periods, Christmas, New Year and February half-term, the slopes are so quiet; no queues, no hassle, just clean skiing on perfectly groomed pistes. The ski area is accessed by three main cables cars, Val Veny, Courmayeur and Dolonne, this spread of uplift means that queues up to the slopes are rare.
Off The Mountain
You won’t be short of things to see and do in Courmayeur. From browsing the plethora of shops and boutiques along Courmayeur’s cobbled streets, to enjoying a lively café and bar culture at après-ski time, this is a charming and interesting place to explore at all hours of the day.
One thing that Italians do particularly well is eat. The quantity and quality of restaurants is outstanding and can cater for all budgets.
The internationally acclaimed Terme di Pre St. Didier is only 5km away, amazing cross-country skiing can be accessed in Val Ferret and if you are not too tired, the sports centre in Dolonne offers, ice-skating, a climbing wall, tennis courts and a well equipped gym.
